ICEFA 2010 prize awards - Greece, Anthens

20. 12. 2010

On 8 December 2010 ceremonial prize awards took place of the 38th International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice 2010. Being organized by the Embassy in Athens, the event saw certificates being awarded to five children from art centres in Athens and Chalkida personally by Ambassadress of the Czech Republic to Greece H. Ševčíková.

It is a long tradition in Greece for artistic and cultural centres and art schools to participate in the International Children’s Exhibition of Fine Arts Lidice. The entries by Greek children win awards every year. Featuring the theme “Biodiversity – Variety of Living Nature”, this year’s 38th ICEFA Lidice 2010 had 126 Greek participants out of whom 5 won prizes: Evangelos Kontovounisios from the visual art department of the art centre in the Athenian district of Dafni, Evelina Panta and Nikitas Theodoropoulos from the art centre in the Athenian district of Chaidari and Evangelos Kastas a Alexandros Anthoulis from the visual art department of the art centre in Chalkida.

Taking place in the ceremonial room of the Embassy in Athens, the award ceremony had a pleasant Advent atmosphere. The excited and eager young winners were accompanied by their parents and other relatives; also their teachers and representatives of the art centres were among the guests. The prize award ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Piraeus, Mr. Andreas Lionis.

Opening the early evening festive event, Ambassadress H. Ševčíková welcomed the guests and a member of staff of the Educational and Cultural Department, B. Lejtnarová, mentioned the tragic events of the WWII, which were common to the histories of both countries. She outlined the reasons for the inception and continuation of the exhibition “Lidice” and stressed the importance of culture in strengthening relations between people and between nations as well as in acquainting young generation with historical events. Trying to continue the success with children and adults of the showing of the animated serial “The Mole” by Czech artist Zdeněk Miler, which took place at the 37th ICEFA Lidice 2009 Prize Awards in February this year, the Embassy repeated this item on the agenda, showing the part pertinently entitled “The Mole as a Painter”. The event ended with a small meal.

Information on ICEFA and the award ceremony of the 8th was published in an English-written weekly newspaper Athens News 16 Dec 2010. The early new year will see the information published in the special supplement for children, “Erevnites”, of the Saturday issue of the biggest Greek daily, Kathimerini.

This year’s ICEFA Lidice confirmed again much interest in terms of participation as well as high prestige of the competition among art centres and schools in Greece, resulting from Greece and the Czech Republic being linked by shared experiences in the recent European history. Lidice inhabitants’ fate was similar to that of Greek villages of Distomo (the partner town of Lidice), Kalavryta and others. The undertakings of the Lidice Memorial, one of which is ICEFA, acquaint the young generation with tragic historical events on the international level so that they should never happen again.
